With the new year upon us, this is a good time to look at where the momentum is in churches across the country. This series shows my guesses for the top ten 2010 church trends.
First, why does it matter what the trends are? Should we as pastors even be paying attention to the trends at other churches? I think it is valuable to keep up on what other churches are doing because we are all part of the universal church. If we want our churches to feel connected to believers around the country we will have to sometimes go with the flow and join together in the same types of things as other churches, even if we aren't ever able to work directly with them.
Of course, we can follow church trends for other reasons too. Some pastors substitute trends for vision; they constantly jump from bandwagon to bandwagon in an attempt to find success by whatever measure they use rather than focusing on what God has called their specific church to do. If you are coming here hoping that I am really giving you "10 tips to grow your church in 2010," you are out of luck. Instead, I hope to focus on directions the church is heading for the next year and maybe give you some ideas of how to join with other churches in doing something that touches your congregation.
As with any list, 9 out of 10 items will probably be debatable at best, but this is what I see for the next year.
